CS2 Chicken Pets: Eggs, Feeding, Hatching & All Skins

Your weekly CS2 rewards can now contain something very different from another skin or case: a Chicken Egg. A new pet system has surfaced alongside the Rush Hour update, with an egg intended to become a chick and eventually an adult chicken. Players have already documented egg drops, while much of the raising process is still known through game-file discoveries.

Important: Egg drops have been observed, but some details about growth stages, feeding, the HatchBook, cosmetics and using chickens in matches are currently based on datamining and may still change.

How to Get a Chicken Egg in CS2

The Chicken Egg can appear in your Weekly Care Package. You need CS2 Prime and must earn your first weekly XP rank-up.

1. Unlock your Weekly Care Package. Reach your first XP rank-up of the week.
2. Check the available rewards. A Chicken Egg may appear as one of the choices.
3. Choose carefully. The Chicken Egg costs both reward selections.
4. Claim the egg. You receive the egg instead of two normal weekly rewards.

The Chicken Egg is not guaranteed. There is currently no confirmed official drop percentage.

Eggs can also have different appearances. Known previews include reddish-brown, cream, green and pale-blue shells with different amounts of speckling. It is currently unknown whether the egg colour has any connection to the chicken breed or colour inside.

How Long Does a CS2 Chicken Egg Take to Hatch?

Current information suggests that a Chicken Egg takes around one week to hatch.

The chicken then progresses through four stages:

1. Egg

The starting stage. Game files include shaking and hatching animations for the egg.

2. Chick

A small yellow chick appears after hatching. The pet can be named and is connected to features such as the HatchBook and photo system.

3. Pullet

As the chicken grows, its actual breed and colour become visible. Current game-file information suggests that match-related functionality also begins around this stage.

4. Hen

The fully grown version of the chicken. Current information indicates that adult chickens have a limited lifespan. The HatchBook remains as a record of your pet afterwards.

Exact durations for every individual growth stage are not yet confirmed.

How to Get Chicken Feed in CS2

CS2 also contains a new item called Chicken Feed. The item appears as a blue bag from the fictional Sunnyside brand.

According to information found in the game files, Chicken Feed can also appear in the Weekly Care Package and, like the egg, uses both weekly reward selections.

The game is expected to warn players when their chicken is becoming hungry. Current datamined information suggests that if the pet completely runs out of food, it may leave permanently.

However, because the system is brand new, details such as exactly how much food is required, how long one bag lasts and the exact hunger timer are not yet fully confirmed.

There are currently 34 adult chicken colour variants shown in the available game data. Together with the standard yellow chick, community previews often refer to 35 chicken looks.

Additional chicken variants have also been found in the files but are currently marked as not available in the game. This means Valve could potentially add more chicken colours later.

Are Some CS2 Chickens Rarer Than Others?

Game files contain different weights for several chicken colours, suggesting that some variants may be more common than others.

However, these probabilities have not yet been officially confirmed by Valve. It is also not yet clear how the game selects between Catalana, Silkie and Polish.

Once enough Chicken Eggs have naturally hatched, the community should be able to determine the actual distribution more accurately.

What Is the CS2 HatchBook?

The HatchBook appears to be a personal photo album for your chicken. It contains different chapters documenting the Chick, Pullet and Hen stages.

The photo system is expected to allow players to pose their chicken together with their CT or Terrorist agent and customize the scene with different backgrounds, filters, effects and accessories.

Dataminers have also discovered several accessories intended for chickens.

These cosmetics have been discovered through game data. This does not currently mean that Valve has announced a chicken cosmetics shop or that these items will be tradable.

Can You Take Your Chicken Into a CS2 Match?

This part of the system is still not completely confirmed through normal progression because the first naturally obtained eggs have not had enough time to complete the entire growth cycle.

Game-file information suggests that chickens can eventually appear in matches from the Pullet stage onwards and can also appear in the player's lobby.

More information should become available once the first naturally obtained chickens have fully grown.

Can You Trade or Sell CS2 Chickens?

Chicken Eggs are currently reported as untradable. Current information also indicates that Chicken Feed and the chickens themselves cannot be traded or sold.

This means that, unlike weapon skins, knives or gloves, the new chickens currently do not appear to be a normal Steam Community Market economy.

Players therefore shouldn't assume that a rare-looking chicken automatically has a tradable cash value.

CS2 Chickens Are Only Just Getting Started

The new chicken system is one of the strangest additions Valve has made to CS2 so far. Instead of simply receiving another cosmetic item, players can hatch an egg, raise a chicken, discover its breed and colour, feed it and build a HatchBook documenting its life.

There are still plenty of unanswered questions. Drop rates, exact growth times, hunger timers, chicken rarity and several datamined features still need to be confirmed through normal gameplay.
